I think even back then I was not too impressed with the gunplay next to something like Halo on my xbox, but I still loved the game the graphics especially. I remember telling the boss of my summer job the day it came out that I wasn't feeling good and had to go home he raised his copy of the game he had on his desk and was like "yeah right! Go home and play it." Got a new Radeon card too. Huge fan of the game, I remember it felt like an eternity waiting for it to finally come out. In a way you could say that the whole game was designed around the engine and its limitations, which many take to be an inherent flaw of the game. As I mentioned this strength turns into a weakness when you realize that you won't encounter many open spaces throughout the game (and those are generally the worse looking section of any level) but that too complements the design of the game very well, since Doom 3 was created to instill fear and a sense of claustrophobia. The artists were very careful in creating props and in lighting them in ways that showcase the major strength of the engine, that is to say the unified shadowing and lighting system. Nowadays that's not necessarily a compliment, since our understanding of the theory of digital visuals has progressed a lot, but I do think that it still possible to appreciate the graphics of Doom 3. Notice the lights emitted from the holes in the rightmost wall, or the tubes that run alongside. The creativity and the ingenuity that was put in designing the levels is astounding.
